There are plastic tabs on the pillar cover that are easy to break when removing it. The tabs stop the windscreen from detaching at speeds over 50 mph. Black goo adhesive will not keep the windscreen attached at 60mph
I feel your pain. This past winter, I got 2 relatively small chips in the same spot directly in the driver’s line of vision within a couple months of each other. The first I had repaired by Safelite at the insurance’s (Amica) expense. I’ve opted to just monitor the 2nd one, which, while it hasn’t changed, is a constant irritant while driving.

Wow. Maybe these have soft glass or something.
I made a mistake - the tabs are to stop the pillar cover from detaching! But if the cover detaches then the windscreen is more at risk anyway
