The NHTSA recall to fix the backup camera issue is supposed to go into effect on June 19th and today (June 18th) people are reporting that an OTA (over-the-air) update has appeared on their car in North America.
So far my 2021 Polestar 2 is not showing that an update is available, but reports on Reddit show this notification screen appears:
For North America, it has been about a year since the last OTA update.
In theory you can go to the System settings and choose Software Update to have it check for an update, but it does not appear that actually does anything. Instead, nearly everyone has said that the update notification appeared on their car automatically. At least one person says they sat in their car for a short while and the OTA notification appeared.
After the update has been applied, the version is either 3.6.3 (according the Polestar release notes) or 3.6.4 (according to the app).
Polestar 2 Software Update Release Notes
I eagerly await my OTA notification as my Polestar 2 is still on 3.1.9. I’ve had no real problems with the car or its backup camera, but I’ve been unable to get the iPhone (or Android) app to connect to my car and I’m hopeful that this update might help with that.
If you’re one of those that has been able to apply the notification, please let us know your thoughts on it in the comments.
Update: I did get my OTA notification about 3:30p on June 19th:
I have scheduled the update to run at 2:00am overnight, so hopefully I wake up tomorrow with a properly updated car! 🤞
The next morning, after a somewhat slow reboot, the car showed the “Update complete” screen.
I then when to the System page to verify it was updated to 3.6.4! Yay!
This did re-arrange some stuff on my app panes, but those were easily dragged back to where I had them. There is now also an additional Android Auto app, of course. I didn’t really notice anything else that was different.
Unfortunately, the iPhone app still refuses to connect to my car, exhibiting the same behavior as before. I’ll soon be doing a longer article about the troubles I’ve had with this.
The little Cloud Download icon just appeared today while I was driving to work. Like any good software company, you roll updates out to people in waves so if there are any issues that were missed in testing it would only effect the first in the rollout and not all users and they could stop and fix the issue.
