NHTSA issues Recall Query on Polestar 2 backup camera issue
On July 9, the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has opened a Recall Query, RQ25004, regarding the previous recall for the backup camera issues that some owners are seeing.
This issue was supposed to be solved by software update 3.6.4, but over 100 Polestar owners have reported (via VOQ, Vehicle Owner Questionnaire reports) that they are still having the issue, so the NHTSA has re-opened things for further investigation.
The problem description remains the same:
The rear-view camera display may have visualization issues during a backing event. Failure to display the rear-view image will reduce the driver’s visibility in a backing event, increasing the risk of a crash.
From the history notes:
On June 21, 2025, ODI began receiving complaints from consumers whose vehicles had been remedied according to Recall 25V-280, but whose rear-view cameras were nevertheless continuing to fail in the same manner that they had previously. In July, ODI discussed the complaints with Polestar, which confirmed that their over the air software remedy for Recall 25V-280 did not correct the original issue.
If the investigation decides that the software update was inadequate, then Polestar will likely need to issue another software update. A more drastic resolution would be another recall that requires hardware updates.
I personally have never seen this backup camera issue on my 2021 Polestar 2, but I do know that many people on Reddit, Facebook and the Polestar 2 forum have reported that they still have the problem.
If you are also still having the problem after applying 3.6.4, be sure to report it to the NHTSA.
