For some drivers, the Polestar 2 backup camera has not been completely reliable. Sometimes when shifting the car into reverse, a “Camera is temporarily unavailable” message appears on the Infotainment screen.
I’ve only had my Polestar 2 a month and although I’ve driven it over 1,000 miles most of those have been going forward, not in reverse. Kidding aside, I have not seen this issue as of yet. My car is on software 3.1.9.
I generally back into my garage after a drive, whereas most people that report the issue seem to indicate that it happens when the car is first used and put into reverse after sitting around for a while.
Anyway, NHTSA has issued a formal recall for the Polestar 2 regarding this issue.
This recall is for all 27,816 Polestar 2 cars sold in the US that were produced between July 9, 2020 and November 22, 2024.
I am guessing that this recall is the reason why software 3.4.4 has not been pushed out as an OTA update in the US. I’ve seen several drivers report that 3.4.4 has not actually fixed this issue and if Polestar knew a recall was imminent it would make sense to not issue 3.4.4 as OTA.
I can only presume that there must be a newer software update coming that addresses this. Ideally Polestar will push it out OTA rather than have 27,816 cars possibly show up at a mere 30 dealers.
There was a voluntary recall regarding this issue last year and this recall is an update against that one, according to the chronology notes.
Dealers were notified of this recall on April 25, 2025. Owners are expected to be notified starting around June 19, 2025.
There is one other sad note mentioned in the recall:
The Polestar 2 is no longer being produced for the US market.
Obviously that is because of the tariff tax situation. Being made in China, the Polestar 2 now costs far too much to sell in the US with the current tariff taxes. The Polestar 3 is made in the US and continues to be sold here.
If you’re looking for a Polestar 2, you’re going to have to find a used one. For more information on that, be sure to check out my Buying Guide:

For a variety of reasons, EVs have extraordinarily high deprecation. The Polestar 2 might have some of the highest depreciation of any EV at the moment, but without the baggage of a Fisker or Tesla.

Appreciate the post. Since purchasing my 2023 P2 a month ago, I have only seen the camera fail a few times. I reverse out of my garage and when leaving my office parking space on weekdays. I'm curious to see if it's included in the recall.
