Taking the Long Way Home
Before I got my Polestar 2 I would nearly always choose to take the highway on road trips. Why? I guess it’s because I prioritized getting to my destination sooner, over time spent driving.
This probably made some sense as the previous cars I had owned were not exactly known for great driving dynamics. The Polestar 2 has totally flipped the script for me, however.
Now I look at what routes might get me there without using the highway the entire way. I’ve even turned on the “Avoid Highways” setting in Google Maps a few times!
Although the Polestar 2 is stupid-fast and is a great highway car, it is also amazingly fun to drive on twisty, hilly back roads, even if I’m not really driving fast on them. Plus, there’s also the benefit that I get much better efficiency when keeping the speed under 50mph.
I can easily get about 30 kWh/100mi (or 3.3mi/kWh) when driving on country roads.
So now I will often choose to cruise on these back roads with the tunes blaring, enjoying the drive. It’s been so much fun to drive that I drove about 5000 miles in about five months. For reference, with my previous EV, a Hyundai Ioniq, I drove about 6000 miles in about 13 months. And the Corolla I had before that (now owned by my daughter) has about 55000 miles after 9 years, which is also about 6000 miles a year.
Apparently, I’m now driving my Polestar 2 about twice as often as I’ve driven other recent cars I’ve had!
Have you found yourself driving your EV more on old country roads instead of highways?
